Batch brewing
How Much Coffee for 8 Cups?
For most 8-cup drip machine batches, start around 75 to 85 grams of coffee. For eight full 8-ounce mugs, use about 118 grams.
| Water amount | Coffee at 1:16 | Tablespoon estimate | Use case |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1,200 g / 40 oz | 75 g | 13 to 15 tbsp | Common 8-cup machine line |
| 1,360 g / 46 oz | 85 g | 15 to 17 tbsp | Stronger full carafe |
| 1,600 g / 54 oz | 100 g | 18 to 20 tbsp | Large thermal carafe |
| 1,893 g / 64 oz | 118 g | 21 to 24 tbsp | Eight true 8-ounce mugs |
Make large batches taste less flat
Large drip batches often taste flat because water sits in the grounds for longer. If the coffee tastes bitter, grind slightly coarser. If it tastes weak but not bitter, use a stronger ratio such as 1:15.
Best low-effort setup
A thermal carafe, a basic scale, and freshly ground beans are enough for repeatable batch coffee. The scale matters more than a premium brewer at this stage.
For big drip batches, weigh the water once and mark the carafe line you actually use. Machine cup numbers are rarely true 8-ounce cups.
