Immersion brewing
French Press Coffee Ratio
A reliable French press starting ratio is 1:15. Use 30 g coffee for 450 g water, 40 g coffee for 600 g water, or 60 g coffee for 900 g water.
| Water | Coffee at 1:15 | Coffee at 1:16 | Batch size |
|---|---|---|---|
| 350 g | 23 g | 22 g | Small press |
| 600 g | 40 g | 38 g | Two mugs |
| 900 g | 60 g | 56 g | Large press |
Technique
Use a coarse grind, steep 4 minutes, gently break the crust, wait another few minutes if you like cleaner cups, then press slowly. Pour all the coffee out rather than leaving it on the grounds.
Common problem
Muddy French press is usually a grind problem. A burr grinder and a slow pour help more than a different recipe.
